Selling Your Junk Cars

What is a junk car?

Junk cars are essentially those automobiles that are so old and damaged that spending money on repairs isn’t worth it. Either it’s sold for parts at a junkyard or for scrap. Both are cost-effective ways of dealing with a car that doesn’t run or is unsafe to drive. Common conditions that can contribute to your vehicle qualifying as a junk car are as follows:

  • Damage – The vehicle has severely deteriorated in the state. Significant parts are either missing or mangled, such as the transmission, tires, or engine.
  • Missing paperwork – A vehicle whose title or registration is missing cannot be sold privately or at a dealership.
  • Inoperable – A multitude of problems pose a threat to the driver or make it unusable.

Who buys junk cars?

If you are planning on getting cash for your junk car, you’re going to need to find a place that buys cars for money. Ideally, you’re on the lookout for the highest payer. So, it’s not going to a simple task. Several companies buy junk cars, but you’ll have to search for the company online or in the newspaper. Keep in mind that you will only get a fraction of what is your car worth is actually worth. Remember they’re only interested in your vehicle because of its recycled value.

What to look for in a junk car buyer

There are numerous businesses that you can sell your junk car to. So, selecting the right one can be tricky. Here is some advice on how to choose the right junk car buyer:

Reputation:

The first thing you should look into when dealing with a junk car dealer is their reputation. You can easily do a little research about the company. Read online reviews. Look for ones with 4- or 5-star ratings, those that are easy to work with, and, of course, the ones that will give the most money. Now it’s time to bring in the car.

Pick up service offered:

If your vehicle isn’t drivable, then it’s not worth holding onto it. Instead of calling a tow truck, look for a company that will tow your broken-down automobile to a junkyard for free. They are in the business to help those that don’t want to deal with a car with untreatable issues.

Cash offered:

Search for a junk car buyer that purchases cars for cash. You can accept a certified check, but be wary of any other mode of payment. Do not agree upon any monthly payment plan.

Document the sale

Make sure to make a contract documenting the sale of your car. Have the buyer sign it. Remember to include all the terms and conditions of the deal so that there are no future issues. Most importantly, you need to inform the DVLA that the car has been sold to a junkyard. They need to know that the automobile is no longer in your possession.

How much is your car worth?

If you are planning to sell your junk car, you need to start by getting a quick online car valuation. You need to get cash for your set of wheels regardless of its condition. Holding onto it is not an option. Ideally, if you do it promptly, you can save money in the long run. As a deteriorating automobile, the longer it’s exposed to the elements, the quicker it’ll rust, and the value of the car will continue to depreciate.

Determining the exact cash amount for your car without seeing it can be quite challenging. But if you provide accurate information about its condition, an online valuation tool will be able to give you an estimate of what you can expect. You might be able to use the figure as a basis for negotiations later on.

Some junk car dealers specialize in buying run-down cars. If your vehicle is a newer car (later than 1999) or it has low mileage (under 150k), the junkyard dealer may offer a better price. Many times, an automobile carrying brand names like Toyota, Honda, Subaru, and Nissan or any model truck or SUV, has a greater chance of being more valuable than just scrap metal.

These cars still hold potential in that it’s worth fixing them, even if it has issues such as a blown motor, body damage, or a bad transmission.

However, if the junkyard dealer finds that it’s not worth fixing your car, they may still salvage the parts and sell them off individually. That way, they’ll make more money than if the vehicle is sold for scrap.

On the other side, if your car is older than 1998, has over 150k on the odometer, and has major mechanical problems or significant body damage, you expect to get very little for your automobile.

Will the junkyard dealer remove the car for free?

A junk car is not supposed to be in working order. So, most junk dealers offer to remove the automobile for free. Since all companies have a different policy, it’s better to ask beforehand. Some will only cover the towing charges if you are located within a reasonable radius. In some cases, especially if there are missing parts, a junkyard dealer may decline to remove your vehicle because it isn’t worth much to them. Even if you gave it to them for free, it wouldn’t cover the expense of transporting the junk car from your home to the yard.

What if I can’t find my title?

It’s understandable how easily the title of your car can be misplaced, especially if you’ve recently moved or encountered a misfortune such as a burglary or fire. It’s possible that you didn’t even realize it was gone until you started thinking about selling the car. Ideally, you need to request a new title through your local DVLA as soon as you notice the original is missing. But as long as your car has a valid title, some junk dealers will take care of obtaining it. They are committed to making the entire process of selling your junk car as easy as possible for you!
